Remarks:

When Estaz first came to market, I was looking for ways to use this fantastic synthetic. I originally intended for the Coma Minnow to be tied on a saltwater hook with dumbell eyes and used for night fishing under lights for speckled trout and snook. But after using the fly for crappie under lights - with success - I downsized the fly for freshwater use. Glad I did... it has been one of my best flies for crappie and smallmouth bass, as well as deepwater bluegills and bottom-hugging redears. And yes... it's more jig than fly. It can even be fished on ultralight spinning rod. Favorite colors are chartreuse body/pearl tail, black body/olive tail, olive body/olive tail, pink body/pink tail.

Materials:
- Jig hook: 1/80 or 1/64 ounce, hook size 10. Painted or unpainted head.
- Tail: medium mylar tubing.
- Body: Estaz chenille.

Instructions:

Build thread body on hook in uneven wraps. Apply superglue or Zap-a-Gap on thread. Cut small section of mylar and tie in to above barb on hook. Tie in Estaz behind jighead and tie down to above the barb. Then palmer the Estaz forward. As you wrap forward, pause when the remaining strand is below the hook, and using your fingers, pinch back the fibers already on the hook. This will prevent the next wrap for covering existing fibers. Continue to palmer forward until the Estaz is right behind the jighead. Lock off the material with thread and finish with your favorite knot (whip finish, double hitch, etc).

The initial fly will look "bushy". One of the properties of Estaz is that, after being in water a few minutes, it gets "swept back". A used Coma Minnow looks streamlined and much more minnow-like than when it came off the vise.
