Remarks:
The Glass Minnow is an excellent generic baitfish imitation. The monofilament body makes it highly durable for surf species like specks, mackeral, bluefish, and ladyfish. One technique used by Louisiana fly anglers is to tie in a dropper knot in the leader, and run one glass minnow's snelled mono through both the dropper knot and a second glass minnow's snelled mono through a tippet end loop. This creates the fly casters version of the popular shad rigs. Materials:
- Mustad 34011 stainless hook, size 2. Instructions: Wrap white thread to end of shank. Make 8-10 tight wraps of lead wire in center of shank. Tie in chenille at end of shank. Bring thread back to 1/8 inch from eye. Wrap chenille forward and knot off. For the tail/wing, cut either 2 1/2" (medium) or 3" (long) sections of each color fishhair. Use no more than a matchstick's worth. Tie in the red thread about one-third down the body. Lay down the white fishhair and secure with 3 wraps. Lay down the chartreuse fishhair and secure with 3 wraps. Lay down the green fishhair and secure with 3 wraps. Finish red thread wraps and knot off. Trim fishhair toward front of hook into bullet head. Attach prismatic eyes.
Overbody options: Snell the mono or ribbing material. If using mono and creating a shock tippet, you'll need a longer section, at least 12 inches, probably more. Use pliers to tighten the wraps down.
