Remarks:
The original Fluff Butt was a jighead fly created by Mark Hester. Part of the success of jighead flies is that, when fished under a mini-cork, they maintain a horizontal plane. Probably because the lead head is at a 90 degree bend to the hook. Gary Peterson's idea was to create a version of the Fluff Butt that could be used on certain trout water without getting busted by the "lead police". The solution was to slide a bead head onto a jig hook. A few experimentations with body material, and the Peterson Fluff Butt evolved into something totally unique from the original. Even a jighead version returned. All the Peterson versions have a shiny body of either metallic braid, flashabou or similar. While it is a great fly for all panfish, including crappie, it is one of the best white bass (barfish) flies there is, especially in a size 8. While the PFB works well by itself, like it's predecessor, it also does wonders when fished under a strike indicator. The key is to look for the slighest unusual movement in the indicator. Materials:
- Mustad 9672 hook, sizes 8 thru 12 (or a 1/100 ounce jighead). Instructions:
(Beadhead version) slide the bead up onto the hook, gravity will hold it in
place for now. Tie in tail material, length equal to the length of the hook
shank. Tie in braid and wrap toward bead, giving it a slightly increasing
tapered look. Tie off braid behind bead. Apply several drops of flexament,
epoxy, or nail polish to the body for a great look! |
